A major void in Charm City's live music scene
will be
fully satisfied this summer, with the grand opening of the FUNK
BOX in the heart of the city's top nightlife district, historic
Federal Hill.
Mothers Federal Hill Grille and Walther Productions have
joined forces to create this new, upscale home for local,
regional and national touring acts on the site of one of Baltimore's
most historic live music venues, the
8 x 10
Club.
In the year since the old club's closing, the new owners
have leveled
the old Cross Street structure to completely rebuild and renovate
the venue as the region's premier destination for adult fans
of all musical flavors. Targeted for an August debut, the
FUNK BOX will cater to a broad array of music genres by building
and expanding upon the location's legacy.
The commitment to presenting live music seven nights a week
best
presents the opportunity to experience blues, funk, jazz,
R&B, rock, pop, bluegrass, reggae, alternative, latin,
salsa, fusion, alt-country, dance, world, zydeco, reggae,
ska, progressive, world beat, hip-hop or singer-songwriter
on any given night in an upscale, intimate venue.
"the FUNK BOX is all about live music -- that's why
we're building it,"
says Dave Rather, whose energetic history in music and special
events as owner of Mothers will be crucial to the FUNK BOX
vibe. "This is a dream come true.
Live music is a passion of my family's, so we're building
this club
specifically for live music, and to provide a great place
in Federal
Hill for all of Baltimore to celebrate live music."
"We are very excited about our involvement with the
FUNK BOX," says Tim Walther of Walther Productions. "It's
an ideal situation to custom build a venue from the ground
up for the sole purpose of presenting live club show. It gives
us a chance to do things right. the Funk Box will offer a
Baltimore stop on the touring circuit for many bands that
currently bypass this market."
Overall, the FUNK BOX has been designed to creatively mix
Federal
Hill's Old World charm with a modern architectural vision.
The new club will span 8,000 square feet -- twice the size
of the previous -- allowing as many as 450 patrons plenty
of space to dance, party, and have a good time. The expansive
renovation combines with an energetic and music loving staff
that's devoted to serving the customers and the artists at
a high level.
This new infusion of energy is the direct result of the pairing
of
Mothers Federal Hill Grille and Walther Productions, each
of whom bring that excitement and strength from their respective
operations. Mothers, located just a block away from the FUNK
BOX, is one of the most popular taverns in Baltimore, and
its Purple Patio is the city's No. 1 pre- and post-game hangout
for Ravens football fans. Aside from expanding Mothers to
twice its original size in its first five years of existence,
Rather has promoted and
produced New Orleans Paddle Boat Concert Series at the Inner
Harbor, several New Year's Eve Balls, and continues to host
annual trips to the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
Walther Productions, nationally recognized for its club shows,
grassroots promotional efforts and campout music festivals,
is responsible for talent buying, managing the calendar and
overseeing the production and systems surrounding the music
at the FUNK BOX. Walther Productions produces more than 100
events annually and sold over 50,000 concert tickets in 2,003.
As the Washington Post wrote: "When noses were being
handed out, (Tim) Walther
clearly got a good one, because he's followed it to success
in the
world of rock promotion, which these days is as cutthroat
as any business."
At the FUNK BOX, the focus will always be on the music ...
and the
people who come out to enjoy it.
